On 23 March 2018, Athaullah A Zackie was sworn in as the 2nd Mayor of Akkaraipattu as per the Extraordinary Gazette no. 2062/51 of 17 March 2018. He was sworn in as the 1st mayor on 08 April 2011as per the Extraordinary Gazette no. 1699/5 of 28 March 2011 as well.  In his first budget, the Mayor worked closely with City Council to fund bold anti-poverty initiatives. The initiatives included the expansion of quality, the improvement of living standards, self-employment, and investing in sports, reconstruction of roads, and libraries.
